Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure for artificial insemination that can be used for treating both male and female infertility. It is the most common type of artificial insemination. In earlier time, artificial insemination procedure was done by placing the sperm in the vagina, but it was never as successful as the current one is.

In intrauterine insemination, the man’s sperm is directly placed into the woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. This helps the sperm to reach the uterus, preventing any complications in its journey. The goal of IUI is to increase the chances of fertilization by making a large number of sperms reach the fallopian tubes. IUI gives the sperm a head start, after which the sperm has to travel and fertilize the egg on its own.

Why is IUI done?

Intrauterine insemination may be a good option for artificial insemination when the man has low sperm count or when the woman has endometriosis. Woman’s older age, low sperm count or poor egg quality, or severe fallopian tube damage can be the reasons behind problems in getting pregnant.

How is it done?

IUI is timed to overlap with ovulation (release of the eggs) period of the woman. The woman is given medications to stimulate development of multiple eggs. Sperm are concentrated from a semen solution, washed and are placed directly in the woman’s uterus.
